Sound Issue On XP32 With CDRom

Postby anonyme-x22 » Fri Nov 02, 2012 6:37 pm

Hi,

I use iso burned on CD.
Tried:
Another world
Real Pinball
Each time there is an access to the cd rom, the sound is weird, repeting itself for 1s or 2s.
Tried:
Alone in the dark, a strange sound is added quite all the time.
Tried:
50ms in audio, sound choppy
80ms the sound is good but get those stranges sound artefacts.
150ms the sound is good but get those stranges sound artefacts.
Can help ?

Thanks in advance,

4DO is likely struggling trying to read from the CD Drive and keep up. 4DO runs much better when using CD images.

Hi,

Do the dev has a cd rom read improveent in their backlog ?
All my game are on cd, it would be great if 4do could read game from cd rom.

Thanks in advance,

I don't think there were any plans to look into improving CD reading from CD Drives. I don't really have any issues on either of my machines when reading from an actual disc. I am thinking it's a case of your CD drive not behaving when reading from burned discs or your computer isn't fast enough to have 4DO keep up while reading from discs. You didn't leave any computer specs so I am not sure what you are using other than 32bit XP.

Hi ,

The spec:
I7-3770
8 go Ram
Ati 5870
Samsung DVD-ROM Drive
Will try an iso to see if it's better.

With a machine like that, it's likely an issue with your burned discs or your DVD drive. That machine should not be struggling to keep up.

Hi,

I've tested with 500 ms audio latency on my dvd ram drive, that works quite well.
It's related to the access time of the reader (Rom reader have less good access time than Ram Reader).
Anyway, it's sure that a read buffer is missing in 4do in order to avoid such issue. Other emu have a read buffer, so the reader access time is balanced.

Do you think this can be an improvement request ?

There hasn't been much development because the devs are quite busy with their personal lifes right now. I can't say that it wont ever get looked into, but right now things are quite slow with 4DO. Maybe someday though.

The audio buffer size (500ms) is the best option at the moment. Playing from CD isn't a large priority at the moment, so I don't think I'm going to be looking into significant improvements here.

I am unsure that improvements in CD read speed or read-ahead are really the solution, either. I'm more suspicious that the read should be asynchronous but isn't.

Hi,

In fact, asynchronous read should produce better results.
